10% EBC Reservation in Gujarat Related News Report
After implementing 10 per cent reservation for economically backward class (EBC) students in degree engineering, bachelor of commerce and arts courses, the state government is ready to implement the newest quota in medical and paramedical courses as well. Cabinet minister for health Nitin Patel said that they are firm about implementing the 10 per cent EBC quota in medical and para-medical courses in state. “We have brought in an ordinance and it will be implemented in all streams, including medical and paramedical courses,” Patel said.Though the Admission Committee for Professional Medical Courses is yet to receive a notification in this regard, officials are expecting it in the next few days.
Like all other streams, medical and para-medical courses will have reserved category seats – 27% OBC, 15% Scheduled Tribe, 7% Scheduled Caste. This means, 49% seats are already reserved. An additional 10% seats will take the percentage of reserved seats to 59%. According to a seat specific calculation in 22 medical colleges in state, there are approximately 2,612 seats on which the admission committee will give admission. The rest of the seats will be All India quota seat in government colleges and management quota in self-financed courses. This means, of the total 2,612 seats, 261seats will be reserved for EBC.
“The reduction will affect the general category candidates. But we will implement it after we receive specifications from the state government,” said a source in the admission committee. The delay in receiving the notification and norms for the admission will delay the admission process, he said. “If introducing EBC in medical education ensures that merit will be strictly followed and no compromise will be made in admitting students, it is fine. Since doctors’ work is directly related to public health, it must be dealt with carefully,” said a student requesting anonymity.ervation cannot be granted on the basis of poverty.
